A Robbie Cavolina film
"Invaluable.” - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times.
"Enthralling" – New York Times.
"SUPERB!” - Time Magazine's #1 Shortlist!
"A Masterpiece of the Medium" – LA Weekly.
The North American Sales agent & Distributor, HILTZ SQUARED MEDIA, is proud to announce : The documentary Anita O'Day: The life of a Jazz Singer, has been nominated for a Grammy award in the category of:
Best Long Form Video!!!!
The film was produced by Robbie Cavolina (also the Director), Ian McCrudden, and Melissa Davies.
Other film nominees include: Chris Botti - In Boston , Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash's America, Keith Urban - Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy World Tour Live, and Various Artists - The Beatles Love - All Together Now.
The “Jazzumentary”, tells the legendary story of American Jazz Singer and musical pioneer Anita O’Day. Regarded as one of the top female artists of her time along with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. In a field dominated by talented African American women, Anita was definitely one of a kind! The film portrays Anita as a woman who lived her life the way she wanted to without regret. She speaks openly about her adversities, including her long addiction to heroin and alcohol. Anita’s choice to live a reclusive life, is sustained only by her love and passion for Jazz music.
The film follows "The Jezebel of Jazz" on tour in Europe, well into her 80’s, and making the final recording, shortly before her death due to cardiac arrest in 2004.
Since its debut at the Tribecca Film Festival, critics have loved the charming gem of a film!
Hiltz Squared Media President, Naomi Hiltz, has this to say about her first screening of “Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer”:
"I've always been a huge lover of Jazz and I'd heard the name Anita O'Day, but after watching the film, I not only fell in love with the movie, but insisted that we do everything in our power to acquire it!!!"
Hiltz Squared Media Vice President, Myles Shane, has sold the documentary to Canadian Pay-per-view Channel, Super Channel, and is currently exploring further options in the United States. The film has been released theatrically in New York and LA.
